Promasidor Plans Fresh Mega Investment in Nigeria

Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell milk is planning to inject more investments in Nigeria that will be four to five times the size of its current investment in the country.

Mr. Robert Rose, Founder of the company disclosed this in an interactive session with the media in Lagos recently.

According to him,  when we  came to Nigeria 18 years ago we did not have reliable data to know what will serve the market better but with  what we have done with our products over the years, not only have we  increased our market share but we have  also grown the market many times. His belief, however is that what Promasidor has done is nowhere near where its potential is.

Speaking further on the planned investment, he said,  “It will be based on an agricultural product which is grown in Nigeria, Soya beans, and it will improve the nutrition of everybody in this country,  if you are already eating beans, then you should be familiar with Soya. Soya is one of the most nutritional vegetables. It has the same nutritional content as meat. It can be sold one third the cost of meat”.

Continuing, he said, “we have already done a market test in Kenya where we taught the people how to grow the right variety of Soya, It is a fantastic product which they never thought they could grow before. We introduced the right variety and we guaranteed the price for them and they are now making money”.

His words, “we are already talking with some state governments to find a site for it. We cannot put a number to it at the moment but we are doing the research. Paul, my son is responsible for putting the people together.

Continuing, he said, “The interesting thing about Soya is that it is a very viable crop. If you grow Soya this year then you can grow maize or any other cereal the following year. So, for the farmer it is an incredible crop and it is good for everybody. So if it is good for everybody then it will improve the nutrition of the country and it will improve the agricultural industry and it will be a win-win situation for everybody”.

Our biggest market is Nigeria because you have more people than any other country in the continent. You have a population of about 150 million and at the moment we sell to about 600 million people in Africa, so Nigeria in our minds will always be 25 per cent of our business. Nigeria should be the biggest market for us. It is a wonderful market but it’s been neglected over the years.

A breakdown of the awards shows Manning Gottlieb OMD, London took the Gold Lion in the Best Use of Branded Content category for its “GT Academy” for Nissan and Sony PlayStation®.   As the credited media partner for Renault’s “The Megane Experiment” submitted by Publicis, Manning Gottlieb also scooped up two Silver Lions in the categories of Best Integrated Campaign and Best Use of Integrated Media.

‪Also OMD agencies also took five bronze lions for spreading wealth across the network in fast moving consumer goods: OMD UK, “Rainy Days” for Walkers and PepsiCo and in corporate image and  information: OMD Sydney, “One Laptop Per Child” for Telstra

Others are charities, public health & safety, public awareness messages: OMD Dominica, Santo Domingo, “I Swim with Marcos” for the United Nations Poverty Awareness campaign.

He said perhaps the most notable – and most gratifying – aspect of those wins is that they were earned by agencies all across their network – in markets big and small, established and emerging, remarking that this consistency across regions reflects the company-wide commitment to ensuring that their best work is recognized on the global stage – a mission that is being carried out each day by their newly formed Light Team, which is charged with seeding and nurturing a culture of brilliant ideas within OMD.

Nardis said this outstanding showing at Cannes affirmed the value of investing in creativity, nurturing top talent and challenging their teams to deliver the very best for clients, adding that with the LIGHT Team supporting this mission, they can look forward to more outstanding outcomes like Cannes 2012. ‪

Starcomms Shines Again at NigeriaTelecoms Award

Starcomms Plc., Nigeria’s leading CDMA telecommunication network, has been awarded the CDMA network of the year (2010) in the seventh edition of the Nigerian Telecom Awards that took place in Lagos at the weekend. Also, Chief Maan Lababidi, OON, the founder of Starcomms, was presented with a Gold Award in the personality category.

While presenting the award to the Chief Executive Officer of Starcomms, Mr. Logan Pather, the former minister of information, Chief Alex Akinyele, who is also the vice chairman of the board of trustees of the Nigerian Telecom Awards, noted that the award which was the last to be presented at the event, crowned all the awards because of the excellence which the company stands for.
Akinyele said this year’s awards ceremony was organized to recognize and reward personalities and companies in the Nigerian telecommunications industry. These companies and individuals have - through thick and thin - ensured the rapid development of the telecommunications industry in the last ten years of existence since the revolution began in Nigeria.
Responding to the award presentation, the Starcomms CEO thanked the board of trustees of the award, led by veteran broadcaster and diplomat, Ambassador Olusegun Olusola, for recognizing the efforts of Starcomms in bringing innovative and excellent services to its customers.
“It has also been a challenge for us to maintain the global standards of our offering to the public as a CDMA network, but this has kept us going long before the advent of other technologies in the Nigerian market, even till now. The recognition given to us through this award can only ginger us to continue to make more values and innovations available to our customers. And we are committed to surpassing our own standards in serving them,” Pather admitted.
As Chief Lababidi received his own award, which was ably presented by the Hon. Minister of Communications & Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, he said that the telecommunication revolution started long before the arrival of foreign GSM companies in Nigeria.
Chief Lababidi further reiterated that the revolution started since 1998, when Nigerian companies invested money in the provision of alternative telephone access to the Nigerian people since the government-owned network was the only available option.
The organizers of the Awards, Logica Communications Limited, said the Gold Award was given to Chief Lababidi because of his immense contributions and accomplishments in the telecom sector.
According to them, “Maan Lababidi is one of the earliest investors in telecom in Nigeria. His investment in telecoms’ industry paved way for floodgate of interests in the sector today. He is the founder of the first successfully managed and most formidable CDMA operator in Nigeria.”
The company applauded Lababidi for his foresight and vision.

Promasidor’s Boss Lists Keys for Successful CSR

Mr. Keith Richards, managing director and chief executive of Promasidor Nigeria Limited has listed five key areas for a successful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

Richards who made a presentation entitled Giving Back to Society: Issues & Challenges at the Annual Giving Back Conference organised by Business Day Newspaper in Lagos recently listed the key areas as consistency, sustainability, credibility, relevance and affordability.

He told the distinguished audience of corporate executives and senior officials of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that for a corporate organization to achieve a successful CSR programme, it was imperative that it built a consistent approach to it and stick to it.

The corporate organization should ensure that its programmes could be relied upon by its partners as well as the need to create programmes that have long duration, Richards said, adding that the personal credibility of the chief executive officer, board, senior managers, programme champions and product quality of such a company were also important.

He said there was also the need to review the programmes to see if they were relevant to the stakeholders and affordable by the company because such programmes needed to be developed in line with budget availability, not just now but in the future.

Richards listed some of Promasidor’s core CSR programmes to include the Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC), Rewards for Excellence in Primary Schools, Partnership with Africa Leadership and Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), Orile-Iganmu Community and Mother & Child Support among others.

He reiterated the intention of the company to sponsor two most successful students in its just concluded National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition to the 2012 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad.

The chief executive said the company would work with the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja to realize the plan.

The Cowbell National Secondary Schools Competition (NASSMAC) started in 1998 in Lagos . By 1999, the scope was expanded to other states, Lagos , Anambra, Kaduna and Plateau while Oyo and Imo were added in 2000.

In 2001, NASSMAC became a national competition covering the 36 States of the Federation including Abuja .

Promasidor was incorporated in Nigeria in 1993 to manufacture, package, market and   distribute fast moving consumer products. Since inception, it has been offering quality and affordable products to its consumers.

It revolutionized the dairy industry with the introduction of sachet packaging of its Cowbell milk, a development which has become the norm in the industry presently. Its products range includes Cowbell milk, Cowbell chocolate, Cowbell flavoured milk drink, Loya full cream milk, Miksi, Onga food seasoning, Top Tea and Amila instant fruit flavoured powdered drink.

The company has a factory in Lagos and depots all over the country from where its products are packaged and distributed to consumers nationwide. The company has recorded remarkable growth over the years and it presently employs more than 1,000 Nigerians in various aspects of its operations.

Starcomms may invest $50m on expansion

The company’s Managing Director, Mr. Logan Pather, who briefed journalists on the company’s expansion plans in Lagos yesterday disclosed that arrangements are in place to roll out more of the company’s outlets to cities which would add value to the company’s bottom line.

Commenting on the cost of providing its service nationwide, Pather said, “For us to provide very efficient and improved service nationwide, it will cost about $50m to $60m which we don’t have. But there is a plan that is being worked out and when successful we should be able to link the entire country without building base stations round the country.

We hope it will work out because at the moment we don’t have the huge money needed for expansion. He therefore called on shareholders to bear with the company, as no dividend would be paid to them in the current financial year. According to him, “The expansion of the business will definitely generate greater returns for shareholders in the future. My agenda is to ensure that the company survive despite its constraints. We want to drive revenue, while maintaining efficiency in our service delivery in order to maximise returns for all stakeholders.” He called on shareholders to exercise patience as it plans to enlarge its reach nationwide in order to make better returns in the nearest future.

According to him, “Starcomms value its customers greatly and has been doing everything possible to enhance its service delivery. Efficiency is what we are after as we are the pioneer of most of the telecoms technology in Nigeria. We normally have monthly forum with our customers to ensure we service them better” He lamented the high cost of doing business in Nigeria, saying “We have decided to cut our operating cost, even though our revenue is dropping. The high cost is affecting our revenue and we have to deliver efficient service to our customers. For instance diesel that cost N100 before is N162 as at today which is on a high side.

So we are planning to enter into partnership with other organisations that will provide alternative power supply that will be regular and less costly in order to enhance our service delivery. We cannot pass the high cost to consumers because of the competition in the industry and we cannot raise tariff, so we are exploring ways that we will reduce operating cost and as well provide efficient service.”
